Spent some time creating an account on darkvisitors.com, adding deps to my site, writing logic to dynamically create a robots.txt file with data from dark visitors' API only for the API to return a 500 Internal Server Error...

For now I'm sticking with the static robots.txt I got from @…

Transitioning the web to default to https instead of http is one of the biggest scams big media has pulled on us. That and shitty "security" apps that insist that sites using dyndns are insecure and criminal in intent. This is a major factor in the corporatization of the web.

I remember when people who ran web sites would ask me "How can I keep people on my site?" and I'd say "You can't. The very nature of the web is an ever expanding universe meant to be explored. People *will leave* your site, but if you want them to return you need to provide reasons for them to return, not just try to lock them in."

Ever notice how some web sites put you into a sign up flow every time you try to log in?

If they prioritize logging in, they’re focused on customers.
If they prioritize signing up, they’re focused on growth.
This also informs who won the internal arguments: people who care about users or people who care about sales.

I loathe the modern web. Reddit is one of the worst offenders, but there's more to hate than to love on big sites. It's such a breath of fresh air to explore non-commercial sites. Fediverse FTW.

I've big sympathies with the core message of this article. Maybe because I'm also using a IMHO quite potent, but old OnePlus 3T and observed that a significant part of boring plain web stuff has become a PITA to use on the go.
The importance of bloated web sites gets much, much bigger if you look at it with a global PoV taking the inequalities into account.
Great writeup. Worth reading even if the technical aspect is not key for you!

I remember seeing a video about some software that you could install on a server that was sort of like Softaculous or other programs that web hosting sites let you use to install applications like Wordpress or Drupal with one click. But this was one you could install even on a raspberry pi. Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

Was a little shocked that IIS didn't have a mime type mapping for WEBP and also that, unlike when I was using IIS a lot 10 years ago, it's hard to find documentation to configure IIS with the UI now and instead it looks like the Apache docs telling you to edit some file...
I guess that's progress because back in my Apache days I had mad scripts to create and configure new web sites.

Reason I use blockers as sites like this want to pull every bit of data from me. Want to show an ad, not a problem, just don't use those invasive scripts. I don't have to read the article, but you need the money, so respect my choices on what ads I don't want.

A large contingent of webdevs seem to think that fast means “best-case fast.”
“Our web sites are fast on expensive hardware and from reliable fiber networks.”
Worst-case fast is a much more meaningful, impressive, and inclusive claim to make! Fast on low-end hardware. Fast on slow networks.
Fast on the World Wide Web—not just from a WeWork in Silicon Valley.
